AWARDS FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE
Social and Behavioural Sciences (including Psychology and Education)
Doctor Kevin Larkin is a creative and scholarly educator who, based on extensive school based practice, motivates, inspires and influences our next generation of mathematics educators. During his 35 years as an educator, he has demonstrated sustained teaching excellence in a range of educational contexts in Australia and overseas. Over the last five years, he has dedicated himself to producing outstanding primary, pre-service mathematics teachers. Drawing upon his national and international publications and research track record - including three National research grants - he has transformed how primary mathematics education is taught. His teaching approach creates positive relationships, improving student success and retention, assists students to overcome largely negative, preconceived and debilitating attitudes towards mathematics, and inspires students to become mathematics educators who strive to foster curiosity and independent learning in future students. This is achieved through an innovative pedagogy that utilises a variety of teaching modes including face-to-face, blended and online teaching. His unique and transformative teaching style has seen him nominated for University teaching awards by over 500 students (2013-2016). He received a 2016 Griffith Award for Excellence in Teaching (Arts, Education and Law Group) and was the 2016 Vice Chancellor’s Griffith University Teacher of the Year.
